The Donner Essential L1 is a fully analog monophonic synthesizer inspired by the iconic subtractive synths of the 70s and 80s – but built for today's music production, live use, and modular systems. With genuine analog circuits, a modern control panel, and a groundbreaking magnetic keyboard system, the L1 combines classic synth character with modern flexibility.

Legendary analog sound engine
At the heart of the Essential L1 is an uncompromising analog signal flow based on three legendary circuits: the 3340 VCO, 3109 low-pass filter, and 662 VCA. The result is powerful bass, warm overtones, and aggressive leads—just like the classic monosynths. The oscillator offers saw, pulse, triangle, noise, and sub-oscillators, and the filter can self-oscillate for classic acid and resonance sounds.

More modulation – more sound design
Two velocity-sensitive envelopes (ENV1 and ENV2) provide precise control over pitch, filter, and VCA. ENV1 can control the oscillator's pitch, PWM, and filter frequency, while ENV2 controls the amplifier. The LFO offers triangle, square, random (sample & hold), and noise waveforms, and can be run at audio rate for FM-like modulation. DRONE mode allows the L1 to be used as a constant sound source or to process external signals via EXT. IN.

Snap2Connect – modular flexibility without cables
Essential L1 introduces Donner's Snap2Connect (S2C) system, where compatible keyboards such as the KB-32M (sold separately) connect magnetically – completely without cables. This allows you to quickly switch between desktop synth and fully playable keyboard instrument. The system is built to expand with more S2C modules in the future.

64-step sequencer and arpeggiator
The built-in sequencer offers up to 64 steps per pattern, 128 memory locations, and song mode with up to four sequences per song. The arpeggiator has five modes (up, down, up & down, down & up, and random) and a range of up to three octaves. Trigger Edit allows you to create more complex rhythmic patterns – perfect for techno, electro, and synth-pop.

Ready for studio and modular systems
Essential L1 is built for modern setups with CV output (1V/Oct), gate output, sync I/O, MIDI via mini-jack, USB-C, and classic audio inputs. It works equally well as the hub of a Eurorack system, as a desktop synth in the studio, or as a live instrument.

Compact, robust, and ready to travel
With a height of just 30 mm (46 mm with knobs) and a weight of less than 900 grams, the L1 is extremely portable. It fits easily into a backpack and is built to accompany you on stage, in the studio, or on the road.
