VOX VFZ-1 Fuzz – Iconic 60s fuzz, reborn for modern guitarists
Few effects have shaped the sound of the electric guitar as much as fuzz. The VFZ-1 pays homage to this legacy by returning to one of the most influential fuzz circuits of all time – the classic two-transistor design from the late 1960s, often referred to as Mk 1.5. A sound whose dynamic breakup inspired an entire generation of guitarists.
Classic germanium character – modern stability with silicon
Vintage fuzz pedals are loved for their warm, richly harmonic distortion, but germanium transistors bring well-known problems such as temperature sensitivity, uneven performance, and higher noise. Silicon transistors solve these problems – but have rarely managed to recreate the musical softness of germanium.
After careful analysis of sought-after vintage pedals, VOX has developed a silicon-based design that preserves the magic of the originals. The two exclusive Silver Can BC108 transistors are precisely biased to work together in the same musical way as the best Mk 1.5 circuits.
The result is a fuzz sound that is aggressive yet controlled, dynamic yet stable—with low noise and high reliability.
Classic fuzz sound—and more
The first transistor stage has an unusually high input impedance for a vintage fuzz, which preserves the guitar's natural overtones and makes the pedal fully compatible with buffered pedals and wah-wahs. This eliminates a classic limitation of older fuzz pedals and makes the VFZ-1 significantly more flexible.
The second stage shapes the breakup character of the fuzz and recreates the smooth compression and rich harmonic saturation associated with overdriven tube amplifiers. Together, they deliver an expressive fuzz with fantastic dynamics and touch sensitivity.
Shape your fuzz – shape your sound
Bass Cut – Adjusts the amount of low frequency fed into the gain stage
Tone Cut – Rolls off treble for smoother, more classic fuzz tones
Crunch Switch – Delivers classic low-gain overdrive sounds without touching the guitar's volume control
Tradition, refined
Inspired by the Mk 1.5 and early two-transistor fuzz pedals, the VFZ-1 delivers fluid sustain, rich midrange character, and dynamic response—but with modern stability, low noise, and significantly greater user-friendliness.
The classic fuzz sound is here, ready for today's pedalboards.
