So-called “fret sprouts” occur when the wood of the fretboard shrinks and the fret ends begin to protrude beyond the edge of the fretboard. The result is sharp or uneven fret ends that feel uncomfortable when you play. This problem can occur on both new and older guitars, especially in environments with low humidity, which is common during dry winter months.
